Benzema bags brace as Bleus beat Honduras

France have made a perfect start to their Brazil 2014 campaign with a Karim Benzema-inspired 3-0 win over ten-man Honduras. The Real Madrid striker scored twice and had a large hand in another as Les Bleus moved to the top of Group E with an emphatic victory at Porto Alegre's Estadio Beira-Rio.

However, while the final scoreline may suggest a mismatch, this was a game that hung in the balance until turning on Wilson Palacios's 43rd-minute red card. Blaise Matuidi had come closest prior to that pivotal moment, forcing a superb, instinctive save from Noel Valladares, who tipped the French midfielder's stabbed shot on to the top of the crossbar.

But just as Honduras appeared set to return to the dressing rooms at half-time having kept a clean sheet, Palacios conceded a penalty and was sent packing for a clear barge in the back of Paul Pogba. Benzema accepted responsibility for the resultant kick and dispatched it in fine style, sending Valladares the wrong way with a powerful shot high to the keeper's right.

That same duel, between keeper and striker, was to be reprised shortly after the restart - and again it ended in agony for the former. This time, Valladares endured the indignity of scoring an own goal, spilling the ball over the line in his attempts to gather a Benzema volley that had rebounded off the inside of the post.

And while there was an element of revenge when the Honduras captain denied his nemesis a second goal seven minutes later with a superb point-blank save, no-one was going to prevent France's No10 from stealing the headlines. With 18 minutes remaining, Benzema secured the win - and pole position in Group E - with the pick of Les Bleus' goals, smashing an unstoppable shot into the net from an acute angle after Mathieu Debuchy's initial effort had been blocked.

France will now march on to face neighbours Switzerland, who also began with a win, while Honduras will aim to get off the mark against the section's other pointless team, Ecuador.

    France-Honduras: Quotes

    Didier Deschamps, France coach
It was a great start for us Ė winning the opening match is very important. We played against a team that defended extremely well, even though we did hit the bar twice before Karim Benzema put us ahead from the spot. After Honduras went down to ten men, the game opened up for us. I thought Karim played particularly well, as did the team as a whole. I went for a mobile front line to avoid getting into an overly physical battle, to stretch their defence and tire them out. It took time, but it worked out in the end.

    Luis Suarez, Honduras coach
It was a tough match, and they came through it better than we did. Weíve got no regrets; they were simply better than us on the day. There are certain aspects that weíll need to improve ahead of our next game. Itís difficult to overcome a team thatís already up by a goal and is capable of holding on to the ball so well. Weíll need to retain the lessons we learned today. If it had been 11 against 11 throughout, we might have done better, but thatís football. We have to put whatís happened behind us and work towards our next match, which is going to be just as tricky.

Karim Benzema (France), Budweiser Man of the Match
Iím delighted and very proud to have scored my first World Cup goals. The crucial thing is picking up the win, but Iím aware that people judge me on how many goals I get. For me, itís the way I play thatís important.

    Post Re: France-Honduras: Quotes

Karim Benzema scored twice as France became the first team to benefit from goalline technology at a World Cup in their victory over 10-man Honduras.
The moment occurred in the 48th minute for France's second goal, when it ruled keeper Noel Valladares nudged Karim Benzema's shot over the line.
The Real Madrid forward gave France the lead from the spot after Paul Pogba had been fouled by Wilson Palacios. Benzema added a late third with a vicious strike from a tight angle.
The match will be remembered for that historic moment when the GoalControl tool was called into action.
Brazilian referee Sandro Meira Ricci awarded the goal straight away as Benzema's sidefoot effort came off the far post, rolled across the line, bounced off Valladares and appeared to fully cross the line before the keeper could claw the ball back into play.
At first the system ruled 'No Goal', causing confusion inside the Porto Alegre stadium. when that message was displayed on the big screen.
But that was for the initial hit off the post. A second judgement then came on whether the ball crossed the line after coming off the Honduras keeper. Despite the technology showing the ball had clearly crossed the line, Honduras players and coaching staff remonstrated with the officials. They were already down to 10 men following Palacios's red card for pushing over Pogba, and this was another bitter blow.
But they had little to complain about regarding the end result. France were brilliant, and should be rightly considered as strong. They had already gone close before the penalty through Blaise Matuidi, when his shot was pushed over by Valladares, and through the exceptional Antoine Griezmann, whose header struck the bar.
That was despatched from the spot with confidence by Benzema, who battled hard for his team up front against a physical Honduras defence. For France's second, the post denied Benzema what would have been a hat-trick with goalkeeper Valladares being awarded the goal for his deflection.
There was no doubt about his third. Diminutive Mathieu Valbuena delivered an excellent free-kick from the right which found Griezmann. The 23-year-old Real Sociedad forward's low drive was blocked, but there was Benzema to blast the rebound into the roof of the net.
France can now seal their passage into the knockout round with victory over neighbours Switzerland, who earlier defeated Ecuador, in what promises to be an exciting clash at the 2014 Fifa World Cup on Friday
