The UK's fourth largest broadcaster Channel 4 has made significant additions to both its mobile TV and high definition portfolios.
As well as launching two new HD channels, Channel 4 +1 HD and 4seven HD, on the Freeview DTT service, the channel has made its popular 4oD on-demand service fully mobile with 3G and 4G streaming enabled and the creation of a new dedicated mobile shorts hub.
Said to reflect the growing viewer demand for snackable videos, 4oD's shorts hub is designed to curate a diverse selection of new and exclusive shorts including magazine shows on subjects from films, games, news and current affairs; popular science and futurology series; comedy and satire formats; lifestyle and food shows; and engaging education formats for teens. 4oD's shorts will feature popular Channel 4 talent including Jamie Oliver and Food Tube celebrities, Guy Martin, Made In Chelsea's Binky Felstead and Mark-Francis Vandelli. The short form hub is available initially only on iOS and C4.com but Android device users can access all short form content.
The first original shorts will be available on 4oD from July 2014 and 4oD's original short form commissioning strategy includes developing a raft of short content with the indie production community including The Connected Set, Don't Panic, Atomized, Clearstory and Lemonade Money. Channel 4 will announce a full first tranche of original shorts commissions later in the summer. There will also be a collection of advertiser funded shorts series. Channel 4 has already formed three major partnerships with Rimmel London, British Gas and Alfa Romeo and is working with agency partners OMD UK, Carat and Maxus Partnerships respectively on behalf of the aforementioned clients.
