Wuaki breaks audience records, plans European expansion

Emilio Martinez-Lazaro's film Ocho Apellidos Vascos broke all audience records in Spanish cinemas this spring, and its move onto mobile and smart screens seems to be having the same effect.
Wuaki.tv saw Ocho Apellidos Vascos top the weekend audience figures when it premiered the movie online.
By broadcasting some of the latest blockbusters and sports programming - it has World Cup rights - Wuaki.tv is consolidating its position in the Spanish pay-TV market in which it has garnered 1.3 million users. In addition, it continues to grow in the UK, where it is focusing on broadcasting across mobile screens.
However, its plans for growth have become more ambitious since the Barcelona-based company was acquired by Japan's Rakuten, and it is ready to launch in France this summer and in Germany and Italy before the end of the year.
In order to support the company's expansion, Wuaki.tv will also increase its staff to around 40 people, who will be added to the current 85-strong team working in Spain and the UK.
