Tribune acquires What's-ON to expand Asian EGP data services

What's-ON, an electronic programme guide (EPG) data provider for India and the Middle East, has been acquired by Tribune Digital Ventures to expand its TV listings and video metadata footprint to over 50 countries.

What's-ON provides EPG data and TV search products for 16 countries, including India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, Indonesia, Kenya and Sri Lanka. Customers include Star TV, Discovery Networks, Hathway Cable, Qatar Telecom, Samsung and Sony.

Data is currently delivered by What's-ON to more than 1,600 TV channels and 50 million set-top boxes.

Phadnis and his team will work together with Rich Cusick and Tribune's existing TV metadata team.

The move follows the Tribune acquisition earlier this year of music and video technology and metadata company Gracenote.
