Afgan TV channel Batur TV is to be broadcast free-to-air via Azerbaijan's national satellite operator, Azerkosmos.

The deal, signed by the Afghan Payvastun Media Company (APMC), marks the first time an Afghan channel has been carried by Azerkosmos.

The partnership between the two companies began as a temporary trial during the presidential elections in Afghanistan in 2014, and has now grown into a long standing relationship.

Azerkosmos is the only satellite operator in the South Caucasus region. Since February 2013, the company has provided satellite resources for telecommunication services and digital broadcasting, as well as VSAT networks.

The Azerspace-1/Africasat 1a satellite is located in the 46 degrees East orbital slot, and covers Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North Africa.
