Times Media Group (TMG) has introduced its new on-demand online streaming service, Vidi, in South Africa.

The unlimited use of the company's film and TV content library costs R149 per month, while a one-off video-on-demand (VOD) rental will cost between R15 and R27.

Content will be streamed to multiple connected devices without advertising interruptions. Breaking Bad, Grey's Anatomy and Cougar Town are among the TV box sets on offer, while films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and 12 Years a Slave will also be available.

The launch pre-empts the arrival of Netflix in South Africa, although pay-TV provider MultiChoice already provides a VOD service for its premium subscribers.

Vidi represents a significant step in the company's evolution to a multi-platform media and entertainment outfit, according to Times Media Group's CEO, Andrew Bonamour. "It builds on the recent diversification ... into high-growth broadcast and content assets in South Africa and in west and east Africa," he said.

A month's free trial of Vidi is being offered for new customers, with viewers able to cancel their contract-free subscription anytime, according to Times Media Group.
