Netflix seals Bouygues deal as it makes debut in France
| 15 September 2014
As it makes its long awaited – and in some cases feared – arrival in France, Netflix has signed a deal with Bouygues Telecom to host the SVOD service on the Bbox platform.
The news provides a huge boost for Netflix which has been scrambling to seal both content and platform deals in France as it hopes to replicate the success it has found with similar launches in non-US territories, especially in the UK and Scandinavia. Numericable has been quoted by many news agencies as just one company with whom Netflix has failed to gain accord, and is even rumoured to be setting up a rival offering.
Under the terms of the deal with Bouygues, Netflix will be available from November on the existing Bbox Sensation platform and future Android-based devices.
"We are very pleased to announce [this deal] with the SVOD worldwide leader," commented Bouygues Telecom president and director general Olivier Roussat. "We are going to continue to enrich our off for our clients, giving access to the best innovative content, at home and mobile."
Added Netflix CEO Reed Hastings: "We are honoured to announce this partnership with Bouygues Telecom [bringing] the incredible Netflix experience to its customers."
