Egyptian satellite operator Nilesat has signed a lease deal for multiple transponders on the Eutelsat 8 West B satellite, to cater for the increasing regional demand for high definition (HD) TV channels.

The satellite – scheduled for launch in the middle of 2015 and which will help serve over 52 million homes in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) – joins three Eutelsat and two Nilesat satellites in the 7-8° West video neighbourhood. Nilesat currently rents capacity on Eutelsat 8 West C in the same location, which will be transferred to Eutelsat 8 West B once the satellite is operational.

"Eutelsat's partnership with Nilesat has fostered the creation of an unmatched broadcasting neighbourhood serving channels seeking to optimise their reach and deliver high quality. We are committed to delivering industry-leading service and look forward to pursuing and strengthening even further our strong collaboration with Nilesat," said Michel Azibert, chief commercial and development officer, Eutelsat.
