Arabsat is partnering Saudi Arabia's Selevision to launch what the companies intend to be the first HbbTV-based service in Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The service will be uplinked from Jordan Media City to the Arabsat satellite at 26 East, and delivered through service providers du in the UAE and Overon in Spain. The HbbTV service will run alongside Selevision's over-the-top (OTT) video platform and draw on its content library.

"Arabsat is always keen to deliver new experience to its viewers and facilitate access to new technology for its broadcasters base customers; this partnership with Selevision will add value to the Arabsat hotspot at 26 East with its growing neighbourhood that will benefit both the broadcaster and the viewer," said Khalid Balkhyour, president and CEO, Arabsat.

"This platform will leverage on Arabsat's reach and on Selevision's extremely competitive offerings and services. Both parties have invested in this platform to provide an excellent cooperation model in the industry," he added.

Selevision is also introducing a hybrid Android unit with an approved CAS system platform called REDO for the project. However, the service will, the companies say, be compatible with all HbbTV boxes already on the market.
