Plans to close down Teledeporte in addition to the never-ending debate about financing and the possible staff reductions have pushed Leopoldo González Echenique to resign after two years leading RTVE.

rtve1The head of Spain's national broadcaster presented his resignation to the Parliament on 25 October 25 after postponing the administration board meeting that was scheduled three days earlier.

Echenique had been facing critics since being appointed RTVE president in June 2012. Falling audiences, increasing debt and continuous complaints about the news coverage by the Telediario team, though have marked his tenure. Moreover it has been characterised by huge cuts in funding. After several months struggling to follow the cuttings' plan and facing a huge debt, Echenique agreed with the Ministry of Finances, Cristóbal Montoro, an extra injection of €270 million for the public corporation , but only half of which has arrived.

Besides, a new efficiency plan is to be approved, including the sports DTT channel Teleporte closure and the reduction of directives and managers by 5%.

Echenique, who will be temporary replaced by José Manuel Peñalosa Ruiz, said goodbye in a letter highlighting the importance of RTVE "for the society, the audiovisual industry and the country."
