Ecuador is said to be missing around $50 million a year in pay-TV industry taxes, due to high rates of piracy.

According to Fabián Jaramillo, president of the country's Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Supertel), speaking during an anti-piracy workshop, the state is not receiving income from set-top box (STB) imports, consumer activity or connection and network taxes.

During the last three years, when the Ecuadorian state was focusing much more on fighting piracy, $150 million on taxes have been missed, according to Jaramillo.

Regarding viewers, loss of quality and lack of guarantees were the main reasons for them using illegal pay-TV connections, added Jaramillo
