Japanese direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV operator Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation will launch two 4K ultra high definition (UHD) television channels on 1 March 2015.

Sky Perfect, which launched the world's first test 4K broadcasts in June 2014, says the channels will be available via the Sky PerfecTV premium service.

The dedicated 4K channels will feature J-League football matches, along with other sporting events, films, live concerts, and other content yet to be determined. Subscription costs and channel names will follow in due course.

The news follows the recent announcement by the Japanese Government that it plans to start 4K and 8K UHD broadcasting on BS channels by 2018 in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Test broadcasts will begin in 2016 during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, with full broadcasting beginning two years later, in time for the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
