News7 Tamil, a new 24-hour Tamil language news channel, is expected to launch in India on 19 October.

Backed by the VV Group, the Tamil Nadu-based channel is to be chaired by former Al Jazeera bureau chief Nick Walshe, with Rajesh Sundaram as editor and head of news, according to IndianTelevision.com.

Advertisements for News7 Tamil claim that it will be the first news channel with a distinct Tamil perspective on world news, with a tagline: 'Global news channel for the Tamil diaspora'. In addition, social media is set to be a strong focus for the channel's 'younger than average' newsroom.

"We are perhaps the only TV set up in India with a social media studio in place," Rajesh Sundaram, editor, News 7 Tamil told The Hindustan Times.

News7 Tamil, broadcasting on the Intelsat 17 satellite , will compete in the Tamil language current affairs field with Sun News, Seithigal, Puthiya Thalaimurai, Thanthi TV, Captain News, Lotus News and Sathiyam TV.
