TalkTalk taps Harmonic for IPTV processing
| 29 October 2014
As it aims to scale upwards its IPTV service with high-quality live and VOD content and an increased channel line-up, TalkTalk has deployed processing, encoding and head-end technology from Harmonic.
TalkTalkThe leading UK ISP, founder menmeber of the YouView project, will make use of Harmonic's Electra 9200 universal multiservice encoder and ProStream 9100 with ACE stream processor and transcoder that are said to feature a highly dense and scalable architecture, from which it can deliver these new services cost-effectively. The Electra 9200 will offer MPEG-4 AVC encoding of video content for TalkTalk's IPTV services and as the ISP adds more linear channels and video-on-demand content to its line-up, the encoder's scalable architecture will grow to accommodate additional channels. For its part, ProStream 9100 with ACE is claimed to be the industry's highest density processing and transcoding solution able to transcode up to 60 SD MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC broadcast services, maximising TalkTalk's operational efficiencies and cost savings.
"YouView from TalkTalk is Britain's fastest growing TV service. To deliver our growing range of content to more than a million subscribers, we needed an IPTV head-end solution that would increase our encoding efficiency and support future growth," explained TalkTalk Group broadcast systems team leader Naresh Raj. "Harmonic's integrated video processing solutions provide outstanding video quality while lowering our capital and operating expenses through density and scalability. Relying on a unified head-end from Harmonic, we have the flexibility to support additional subscribers and add more channels as our market requirements change."
