CW, Warner to adapt El Barco for the US

Warner Bros Studios and US network CW are to adapt Globomedia's series El Barco for the US market.

a3The series, which has been broadcast by Antena 3 in Spain, will be renamed The Magellan and will air on CBS' network CW.

El Barco, created and produced in Spain, has been also adapted for Russia and the original format has been sold to almost 50 countries around the world.

The script for the pilot episode is being written by Jennifer Johnson, executive producer of series such as Lost, The Following, Alcatraz, Chase and Cold Case. Daniel Écija, founder and president of Globomedia, will be executive producer for the Warner Bros version, with which Spain's Ombra Films - with Jaume Collet and Juan Solá - will also collaborate.

The series, which aired for the first time in 2011, has seen three seasons on Antena 3, during which it garnered an average audience of 3.2 million viewers and a 17.4% share of the free-to-air (FTA) audience. The series, which stars popular young actors Mario Casas and Blanca Suárez, achieved 33.7% among the youngest audience segments.
