YouView snaps up Netflix
| 04 November 2014
As it aims to spread its UK reach to ten million homes, YouView has added a direct link to Netflix through the EPG of its non-subscription on-demand service.
YouView already offers all the major UK on demand players — including the BBC iPlayer, 4OD, ITV Player, Demand 5, Milkshake, UKTV, Quest from Discovery, NOW TV from Sky and Sky Store. By adding the world's leading subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service it will be able to offer shows such as Breaking Bad, The Originals, Homeland and original series such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards and Bojack Horseman. From 12 December it will add new original series Marco Polo and films available to watch instantly on Netflix including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Skyfall and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Netflix will be available immediately on YouView from BT set-top boxes and Humax set-top boxes purchased from a retailer. BT TV customers who sign up for Netflix alongside BT broadband and TV offers will have the added convenience of paying for Netflix via their BT bill, a world first for Netflix. YouView accessed from TalkTalk set-top boxes and Huawei retail set-top boxes will receive this update early in the new year. TalkTalk users can pre-register immediately.
Commenting on the move, Richard Halton, CEO, YouView, said: "Netflix is a brilliant addition to our already impressive line-up of TV programming. We are really excited about Netflix and giving YouView audiences even more choice." Added Netflix head of business development Bill Holmes: "We're very excited to bring the Netflix app to YouView boxes and hope to make it even easier for Netflix members with YouView to watch Netflix on their television sets."
