All foreign TV shows must now have permits and be reviewed ahead of their online broadcast, China's television regulator has announced.

The guidelines, released by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television require all TV programmes originating overseas to be viewed by a media watchdog before they can be streamed online, the China Daily reported this week.

The news follows state warnings that stricter action would be taken to regulate online content in China.

In April, four popular US TV shows, including The Big Bang Theory, were banned on streaming sites in the populous Asian country.
