Spanish pay-TV is the business for Telefónica

From being an almost residual activity a year ago, pay-TV has become a leading business for Telefónica in Spain, with Movistar TV reaching 1.6 million subscribers and topping the market's figures together with Canal+, thus capitalising 75% of Q3's international subs growth.

telefonicaIn only 12 months, Telefónica has increased its subs base by 260%, adding 370,000 new subs during Q3. During the coming months, Telefónica will conclude the acquisition of Canal+, adding 1.6 extra million subs to its base and becoming the undeniable leader of the Spanish pay-TV market with over three million customers.

Movistar TV has become a key product in Telefónica's convergent offer, offering pay-TV together with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, essential for the growth of triple- and quad-play packages.

On a worldwide basis, Telefónica has added 458,000 new clients to its pay-TV business - four times more than Q3 last year - reaching 4.6 million subs.

Looking at the general figures, César Alierta's company has made €2,849 million profit globally as of September 2014, mostly driven by its mobile telecom business in Latin America. During the first nine months of the year, Telefónica accumulated income of nearly €38,000 million across Europe and Latin America.
