KVH secures maritime TV with ARRIS
| 14 November 2014
ARRIS Group is providing its SecureMedia advanced content protection technology to KVH Industries, securing the company's IP-MobileCast satellite-based entertainment-on-demand service for ships at sea.
ARRIS SecureMedia is being used to ensure that the content provided by IP-MobileCast, including popular television shows, movies and televised sport events, is only available to subscribers and is safeguarded against unauthorised access.
"Our customers don't want to lose the programming they enjoy at home when they go to sea," said Jim Dodez, senior vice president of marketing and strategic planning at KVH Industries. "With ARRIS SecureMedia, our IP-MobileCast platform delivers that protected content to the device of the customer's choice, while ensuring access is restricted to appropriate parties. We began using SecureMedia earlier this year, and we are extremely happy with the quick development cycle and ease of deployment of the technology that has ensured a successful launch."
KVH's on-demand IP-based content is distributed via satellite to the vessel, and stored on the ship's media server and then delivered to set-tops, on-board computers, tablets and smartphones.
"Smartphones, tablets, connected TVs and other IP-enabled devices have fuelled the TV everywhere phenomenon, changing our viewing habits and expectations," said Fred Ellis, senior director of content protection solutions at ARRIS. "KVH is addressing consumer demand with its innovative IP-MobileCast service, reaching ships at sea wherever they may be. The design and flexibility of the ARRIS SecureMedia solution allows our technology to be easily integrated and deliver the end-to-end security that is crucial to the success of any entertainment service, at land or at sea."
