MTG's Viaplay inks Tele2 partnership, gains Ryder cup rights

Scandinavian pay-TV firm Modern Times Group (MTG) has announced significant broadening of its partnerships and content deals in its home region.

Tele2-Sverige-0022-405x405Principally its Viaplay streaming service has entered a partnership with Swedish telecom operator Tele2, enabling the latter to offer the online video bouquet to its 3.7 million Swedish mobile and mobile broadband subscribers. The partnership is the first of its kind for Viaplay, and both new and existing customers will have the option to include Viaplay in their subscription from the end of January 2015.

This is the latest in a number of key deals for Viaplay over the last year after signing a number of agreements with consumer platforms such as Samsung, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Chromecast in order to increase the availability of the service.

"This deal is very positive for Viaplay, as we are now able to offer our great series, movies, sports, and kids content in more ways and to more people than before," commented CEO Rikard Steiber.

"The demand for mobile data and streaming services is increasing and we look forward to offering our residential customers the best selection of series and films," added Samuel Skott, head of customer and product design, Tele2 Sweden.

MTGMTG has also announced an agreement to extend its exclusive rights to the PGA European tour, the Ryder Cup, The World Golf Championships, the British Open Championship, the US PGA Championship, the LPGA and the Asian Tour in the Nordics and the Baltics until the end of 2018. The extension of these rights means that MTG's Viasat Golf, the only dedicated golf channel in Northern Europe, and Viaplay, MTG's online streaming service, will continue to show more than 1,200 live hours/year of the most exciting golf available.
