The Cable Virtual Network Operator (CVNO) initiative in Kolkata is set to launch after around 200 last mile operators (LMOs) signed an infrastructure deal with multi-system operator Meghbela Cable & Broadband Services.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the parties will see the licensed digital addressable systems (DAS) operator Meghbela provide the infrastructure for the LMOs to run their cable TV services for the next 36 months.
The CVNO model – under the brand name Meghbela – will operate in all areas of Kolkata, with Meghbela levying a fee against every set-top box, sources told Indiantelevision.com.
Cable Operators' Sangram Committee general secretary Apurba Bhattacharya says that work can now be initiated following the signing of the MoU, with the CVNO's launch expected on 15 December 2014.
LMOs are also reported to be talking to set-top box and headend suppliers and other vendors in India and abroad, to further the CVNO initiative.
The move follows an edict from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) calling for MSOs and LMOs to draft an interconnection agreement together to ensure better provision of digital services.
