DirecTV acquires Las Americas basketball league rights

Through an agreement with the international basketball federation, FIBA, pay-TV operator DirecTV has purchased exclusive rights for the pan-American competition La Liga de Las Américas, which now be known as DirecTV Liga de Las Américas.
ligalasamericasThe rights agreement is effective until 2019 and will enable DirecTV to offer exclusive coverage of the competition in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and the Caribbean.
"For FIBA the Americas, the agreement with DirecTV means a great deal and is a big moment for the largest basketball competition across the continent," said Alberto García, executive director at FIBA the Americas. "The now DirecTV Liga de las Américas represents the best clubs competition in the region and the deal guarantees high quality distribution of it."
"For DirecTV it is a matter of pride to be able to support the growth of basketball in Latin America, especially through a tournament like this, the winner of which will play against the Euroleague winner," added Guillermo Barreto, sports programming director at DirecTV PanAmericana.
During 2015, the eighth edition of the Liga de las Américas will be played across the region, 16 teams participating from nine different countries including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Colombia.
