Qatar's Es'hailSat has selected SpaceX to launch its second direct-to-home (DTH) TV satellite in the fourth quarter of 2016 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.

Es'hail 2, which is being constructed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, will be positioned at 26 East to provide satellite communications services to broadcasters and government departments.

"We are delighted to have selected SpaceX to launch our second satellite. Now a proven GTO launcher, SpaceX met our special technical requirements and the time-critical mission to launch Es'hail 2 by 2016-end," said Ali Al Kuwari, CEO, Es'hailSat.

"Securing the launch of Es'hail 2 marks another milestone in Qatar's satellite programme and we look forward to working with SpaceX on the mission," he added.

Clients of the Qatar Satellite Company include TV networks Al Jazeera and beIN SPORTS, which use Es'hail 1 capacity for broadcasting their premium channels in high definition. The Gulf state's first satellite entered service on 18 December 2013.

Es'hail 2 is scheduled for launch before the end of 2016 from SpaceX's Launch Complex 40 at the Air Force Station at Cape Canaveral, Florida.
