DOCSIS 3.0 momentum keeps rolling

Research from Infonetics has revealed huge continued demand for DOCSIS 3.0, with nearly 90 million CPE units shipped over last 12 quarters.

In its 'Third quarter 2014 (3Q14) Broadband CPE and Subscribers: PON, FTTH, Cable, DSL, and LTE' report, Infonetics calculated that fundamentally connected home and multiscreen services continue to proliferate as operators increase the number of services they offer to subscribers and improve margin. As a result, said Infonetics, an increasing number of intelligent, video-capable gateways were being shipped globally to support these advanced services.

The analyst calculated that a cumulative 89.1 million DOCSIS 3.0 CPE units were shipped over the last 12 quarters, in a global broadband CPE market that was worth $2.6 billion in 3Q14, an increase of 6% from the previous quarter. The good news for revenues continued with the news that in 3Q14, DOCSIS 3.0 gateway revenue is up 14% sequentially.

"The current momentum behind DOCSIS 3.0 continued again in 3Q14 and shows no signs of stopping. Cable operators worldwide are using the technology to gain broadband subscriber share," noted Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay-TV at Infonetics Research. "Even if MSOs aren't currently offering DOCSIS 3.0 services, prices on the D3 devices have come down to the point where it makes sense to move forward with them."
