Growing by 140% in Latin America, Telefónica´s Movistar TV is leading the HD growth wave across the region, driving great results for the pay-TV business of the Spanish telco.

"2014 has been a year of solid growth," the company said, stating that Movistar pay-TV units have grown by 14% and reached 2.4 million subs. HD subscriptions drove the increase, totalling over half a million subs in Telefónica´s key markets such as Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.

"HD is essential to Movistar's pay-TV offer and we are very happy for the results obtained," commented Luis Delamer, director for video in Hispanic America at Telefónica.
"Such growth is led by countries like Chile and Peru, in which all the new subs who arrived during 2014 are buying HD-ready set-top boxes," he added.

Over half of the region's pay-TV offer is already available in HD, both through cable and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite, according to figures from consultancy firm Dataxis. By Q3 2014, Latin America reached 18.4 million HD subscriptions, 52% more than 12 months previously.
