Telefónica tackles FC Barcelona rights from Mediapro

After seven years of owning the audiovisual rights of Spanish football team FC Barcelona, Mediapro has just witnessed one of the most profitable sports deals in the country pass to Telefónica.

According to the club, the relationship between the team and Mediapro is over, even though just a few months ago the agreement for a renewed deal was almost complete. However, Telefónica's offer halted the process and now the TV rights of the team, which includes stars like Messi and Neymar, has gone to the telco's pay-TV platform Movistar TV for the next season.

Although the final amount has not been unveiled, the club will be getting around €140 million plus €40 million through parallel sponsorships. The figure shows the disparity in the audiovisual rights of Spain's La Liga, as a minor club in the first division gets between €10-15 million per season.

Behind the decision to pick Telefónica is also the aim to increase promotion and the club's channel distribution in Latin America, where the telco has a solid position.

During this last year in which individual rights negotiation is allowed - from the 2016-2017 season La Liga will negotiate collective agreements - FC Barcelona joins Espanyol, Celta and Real Sociedad under Telefónica´s umbrella.
