Aiming to strength its position as a reference channel for movie fans, Paramount Channel will broadcast the Film Independent Spirit Awards across the whole of Latin America.

The awards, which will be held this Saturday (21 February) in California, aim to recognise productions and actors from the independent scene. Latin American representatives from the audiovisual industry including Alejandro González Inárritu, Emmanuel Lubezki and Andrea Suarez Paz, as well as other famous faces like Marion Cotillard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emma Stone and Edward Norton will be attending the event.

In addition to the more traditional awards like Best Actress or Best Director, the Spirit Awards include Best Directorial Debut. Having reached an important position inside the independent cinema community, previous winners in the latter category include Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Robert Rodriguez, Christopher Nolan, Amy Amadas and Lena Dunham.

The Viacom-owned Paramount Channel will be broadcasting the 30th edition of the awards to a potential audience of over 21 million homes across Latin America.

The international group has recently been attempting to increase its presence among Latin Americans, through moves such as launching several multi-platform apps with video-on-demand (VOD) content for all its channels operating in the region.
