Netflix ready for Spain: preps LG, Samsung app, negotiates Hollywood rights

The rumour of Netflix's September launch in Spain has been increasing in strength over the weekend, with the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform reported to be negotiating smart TV apps with Samsung and LG and audiovisual rights for the country with some Hollywood studios.

Still awaiting confirmation from the US streaming platform, it seems that Spain is included in the big expansion plans announced by Netflix, which is currently present in most large European markets including Germany, France, the UK and the Nordics.

According to Europa Press, both Samsung and LG have confirmed they are working together with Netflix to launch an app for the Spanish market. However, Toshiba made a similar announcement in December which was quickly denied by Netflix.

According to the financial newspaper Expansion, the streaming service is also negotiating audiovisual rights with several production houses and is buying film and series rights for Spain.

Netflix has waited a long time to launch in Spain due to several reports which pointed to weak market conditions for the SVOD service. The company's main concern is that the Spanish audience is not willing to pay for content, although the recent approval of a strict copyright law has driven pirate and unregulated streaming sites to close, reducing piracy rates.

However, now Netflix also faces increasing competition, with Movistar TV's VOD series platform Movistar Series on the up, clearly established in the country with over a million users, and other VOD platforms such as Canal+'s Yomvi, Filmin and Atresmedia's Nubeox also seeing growth
