Shanghai Media Group (SMG) has chosen LiveU's cellular bonding transmission technology for live broadcasts across its platforms.

Supplied and installed in conjunction with LiveU's Chinese partner Diadem, the equipment comprises multiple units of the company's lightweight LU500 backpack for its newsgathering operations.

It follows the supply to SMG of LiveU technology to cover the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and to support the Washington news reporting division, among other events.

"LiveU's technology offers a highly cost-effective option for live HD coverage, with no need for satellite trucks. The LU500 stood out from other solutions in our tests in terms of video quality and resiliency crucial in China because we're covering stories all over the country, often with variable cellular coverage," said Sheng Song, chief of section, 2nd T production department of STV Technical Section, SMG.

"With its multiple internal modems and antenna modules, the LU500 enables us to transmit live video with minimum delay even in remote areas. We're also utilising LiveU's mobile app, LU-Smart, for smartphones and tablets, allowing our reporters to extend their coverage on-the-move," he added.

The current installation is to be extended to include LU500 units in SMG's overseas news reporting division, in local news production and for the group's sports channels. The LU200 mini newsgathering unit, an external antenna and new smartphone apps are also to be added in the future.
