Sony has launched PlayStation Vue, its cloud-based TV service, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 gaming systems.
Offering live and on-demand TV content, PlayStation Vue is initially available in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, starting at $49.99 per month. The service includes 85 channels and a number of local network partners. Feeds include CBS, the Discovery portfolio, FOX, NBCUniversal, AMC Networks, Scripps Networks Interactive, Viacom and Turner Broadcasting.
"The TV experience needs a revolution and PlayStation Vue changes the rules by embracing how today's viewers want to discover and enjoy content," said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Computer. "PlayStation Vue modernises the TV viewing experience, taking the best of live TV and on-demand content and bringing it to the PlayStation ecosystem in a way that gives control back to viewers and enables them to spend more time watching their favourite programmes and less time channel surfing using outdated menus."
Already Sony has signed up Turner Broadcasting System for Vue and the content firm will offer its entire portfolio of networks on the new service. In a statement explaining the move, Turner Broadcasting said: "With the progression and growth of new viewing options in the expanding distribution universe, it's important to put our leading brands and content in a position where as many consumers can access them as possible. The more options we give audiences to access content from TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, CNN, Adult Swim and Turner's other popular networks the greater opportunity we have for exposure and consumption from a variety of audiences. Over-the-top services like Sony's Playstation Vue create new paths for distributing our leading brands and provide another opportunity to have Turner's award-winning and highly popular content accessible through a new delivery platform."
