Veteran broadcaster C Lalrosanga has been appointed as the interim director general of Indian state television network Doordarshan following the retirement of Vijayalakshmi Chhabra.

Lalrosanga was additional director general in All India Radio prior to his appointment at Doordarshan. He joined the Northeastern service of All India Radio (NES) Shillong as director after being selected in 1991 by Union Public Service Commission.

Before that, Lalrosanga was assistant news editor (ANE) at AIR in Aizawl.

The appointment of a permanent director general is reportedly to be undertaken once the four vacancies of part-time members of the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati Board are filled.

High priorities for the new boss are likely to include the forthcoming launch of the farming Kisan Channel, along with the expansion of Doordarshan's free direct-to-home (DTH) satellite service Freedish.
