Star India's digital platform Hotstar attracted 7.2 million video views for the first match of this year's Indian Premier League (IPL), following its streaming success during the recent ICC Cricket World Cup.
The match, between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, kicked off IPL 2015 on 8 February. The 7.2 million views it attracted is six times that registered by sister platform starsports.com for the opening match of IPL 2014.
Star India, which holds the digital rights to the IPL, is streaming all 60 games of the popular twenty20 cricket tournament on its recently launched online video platform Hotstar.
The media group predicts it is likely to reach more than 100 million digital fans over the course of IPL 2015, thanks to the increase in online viewers in India over the past year. Star also expects to almost triple its advertiser base this season with 60 brands expected to advertise on Hotstar and Starsports.com.
"The ICC cricket World Cup 2015 witnessed unprecedented viewership in India, both on TV and digital. The tournament logged record views on digital from the opening day itself and broke the Internet during the India-Pakistan game," said Sanjay Gupta, chief operating officer, Star India.
"Mobile has emerged as a preferred platform for 87 million Indians and we will look to renew the fans' relationship with their sport again with the Pepsi IPL on Hotstar."
Hotstar will also be programming a digital-only pre-show evolved from the two original shows it created for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, One Tip One Hand and Juicy Half Volley.
Multi Screen Media, operators of the Sony TV channels in India, holds the IPL broadcast rights in India until 2017.
