Al Jazeera's premium sports channel BeIN Sports will be launching in Spain this summer, following a distribution agreement between the Qatari media group and Mediapro, which will take the pay-TV network to every digital platform in Spain.

According to EFE, Jaume Roures, Mediapro's president, announced the move at the Foro de la Nueva Comunicación industry event, stating that Al Jazeera is among its best customers and associates when it comes to sports production and distribution.

BeIN Sports, which has also been reported to be planning a premium DTT launch, will be airing across Spanish pay-TV platforms from 1 August.

Roures commented: "We will be working together for sports audiovisual rights in Spain and outside its borders, which is what we have already been doing during recent years, with good results for both parties."

Al Jazeera has been intending to jump into the Spanish market for a long time, both to launch its own channel portfolio but also to compete for La Liga football rights. In addition the Spanish market could be used as a platform to strengthen the group's Latin American position.
