Indonesian media conglomerate Global Mediacom is to launch a new fixed broadband network called Play Media, which will be bundled with its pay-TV service MNC Sky Vision (MSky).
Broadband services, along with authenticated multiscreen services, will make MSky more appealing to both current and new pay-TV subscribers, Hary Tanoesoedibjo, president and CEO of Global Mediacom told Media Business Asia.
The broadband network will be rolled out to 600-700,000 homes in five major cities this year, with two more added in 2016. Standalone over-the-top (OTT) video services will be launched once the bundled services become established, he added.
MSky's direct-to-home (DTH) services Indovision, Top TV and Okevision account for a 74% share in Indonesia's pay-TV market with 2.3 million subscribers, but face stagnation in urban areas and severe competition from piracy.
The company is reportedly fighting some 36 cases in court and recently successfully took on one pirate broadcaster, which had 75,000 subscribers.
In a further bid to increase business, MSky plans to offer more HD channels in the country and will also move to MPEG-5 by the end of 2015.
