Sky Cable plans to spend P252 million on the rollout of a direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV service across the Philippines, according to local reports.

In a submission to the National Telecommunications Commission the cable operator, which is owned by media conglomerate ABS-CBN, said it would launch the DTH service in 251 cities and municipalities.

The new satellite service would rival existing Philippines DTH offerings from Cignal, Dream Satellite TV and GSat.

Sky Cable's previously announced plans to launch a DTH service in 2013 were opposed by the Philippine Cable Television Association by creating what it called a monopoly on television service provision.
