With all the figures pointing to a stabilization of the sector, DirecTV is still solidly leading Uruguay's pay-TV industry, gathering more than two out of ten subscribers in a market of barely 700,000.
According to the latest report by telecoms regulator, Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (Ursec), Uruguay had 699,640 subs by December 2014, with over 40% of these being in the capital district of Montevideo.
And the research shows that the market seems to be stabilizing, with slower growth in 2014 than in previous years. Only 47,000 subs were added during 2014, compared to 56,000 more subs (10.4% growth) in 2012 and 59,000 new customers in 2013.
Thanks to its strong presence across the country through its direct-to-home (DTH) platform, DirecTV has managed to keep its lead, but is far from the top in Montevideo, where cable operators are stronger.
Looking at the country as a whole, DirecTV has a market share of 21%, followed by Cablevisión, TCC, Montecable and Nuevo Siglo.
But inside the capital district, Cablevisión is leading the market with 22%, followed by TCC (20%), Nuevo Siglo (18%), Montecable (17%) and DirecTV (16%).
