Vimeo introduces subscription video tools for creators

Opening up what could be a welcome new source of revenue for creators, online video firm Vimeo has launched the first phase of its new subscription tools for its flagship on-demand platform.
The move will see the Vimeo On Demand service, claimed to be the largest open transactional video-on-demand (VOD) platform worldwide, not only offer content à la carte for sale or rental, but also allow creators to choose to charge fans a monthly subscription fee for unlimited viewing. Creators can also sell through the Vimeo On Demand storefront, a publisher network featuring over 100 partners or on any website using Vimeo's embeddable HD player. This has the additional option of offering subscriptions geographic windowing worldwide or in select countries of their choice.
Vimeo says that its new subscription tools are one more way of empowering creators to earn revenue by selling directly to fans, instead of relying on interruptive advertising. Indeed creators keep 90% of revenue after transaction fees. "Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) is a natural extension of Vimeo's transactional VOD platform, giving creators a new way to sell content to viewers worldwide," commented Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor. "Online video is entering an exciting new stage where creators don't have to rely on pre-roll advertising alone to earn money, and Vimeo is building the open global platform for paid video distribution."
