German cable operator Unitymedia will expand its free-to-air HD lineup by four new channels on July 1, 2015.
The additions are public channels Einsfestival HD, ZDFneo HD and 3sat HD as well as UK-based news channel BBC World News HD which will become available in HD quality on a German cable network for the first time.
Unitymedia customers will then be able to receive a total of 11 unencrypted HD channels.
The capacity will be created through the removal of several analogue channels which will start on July 1, 2015. With the move, the subsidiary of US media company Liberty Global will be the first large German cable company to commence analogue switch-off.
In the next months, Unitymedia wants to add further digital and HD channels. Analogue cable carriage will gradually be phased out in the next years.
