Chinese online platform Tencent and Dutch reality TV specialist Talpa have started their co-production partnership with the launch of The 15 of Us, loosely based on Talpa's Utopia show.
The non-scripted programme launched on the Tencent online video platform on Tuesday 23 June. It will also be broadcast via satellite on China's Dragon TV from Monday 29 June.
The 15 of US features 15 participants from different areas of China thrown together on an isolated mountain in the Tong Lu region. They must work together to create a self-sufficient society and then earn money to realise their personal ambitions.
Talpa , which was acquired in March by Britain's ITV in a £355 million deal, reached an agreement with Tencent last year to develop reality formats for the Chinese market. The company, founded by Big Brother creator John de Mol, has achieved great success in China with the localised version of its talent show The Voice.
"Over the years it's been my experience that, if you have a well-outlined basic idea for a format in this genre, reality generates itself," John de Mol said when the co-production deal was struck in September. "I am therefore very pleased Talpa has the opportunity to work together with such a great company as Tencent Video to develop and produce an entirely Chinese show that will attract a vast audience."
