Univision dumps Trump's Miss Universe

After Donald Trump made a racist comment about Mexican immigrants, Univision is terminating its business relationship with the Miss Universe Organisation, partially owned by Trump.

Donald Trump said: "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people" - a remark widely criticised in the US by the Hispanic community and leaders - as he kicked off his presidential campaign in New York.

Shortly after the comments were made public, Univision Communications Inc announced it was ending its agreement with the Miss Universe Organisation at the same time publishing a statement against the racist remarks and defending the Mexican-American community, which makes up a large proportion of its audience.

"At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country," said the media group. "We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on 12 July or working on any other projects tied to the Trump organization."

Earlier this year, both parties had announced a long-term partnership for the Spanish-language television and digital rights for the beauty contests Miss Universe and Miss USA.
