Game of Thrones ends on Sky high note

Showing the results it wanted from its investment in high-quality content, Sky has revealed that the finale of Season 5 of Game of Thrones delivered a record audience of 3.1 million for Sky Atlantic.

GameoThGame of Thrones is now the most-watched Sky entertainment programme ever in UK homes. The record-breaking audience for the pay-TV giant’s high-end drama channel included live audiences for a 2am simulcast and 9pm broadcast on 15 June, as well as customers watching their Sky+ recordings and catching up on-demand over the next seven days.

When figures for the streaming services Sky Go and the NOW TV over-the-top product are taken into account, the total audience will be even higher.

The finale to the service was exclusive to Sky and the company noted that drama’s opening episode averaged 2.7 million viewers for the 9pm broadcast.

Overall, audiences for the latest series of Game of Thrones were up 42% on the prior series. The company also revealed that anticipation ahead of the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 5 also contributed to a record-breaking 23 million Sky Box Sets downloads across the 40 episodes of seasons 1-4 from 1 March through 31 May 2015.
