Indian joint venture Viacom18 has unveiled its latest English language general entertainment channel Colors Infinity, with content from major Hollywood and UK providers, as well as independents.
The channel, from partners Viacom and Network 18, is expected to launch by the end of July and will compete with existing players, including Star World, HBO, Sony Entertainment Television's AXN and Zee Networks' Zee Cafe.
Some 2,000 hours of programming has been acquired from studios including NBC Universal, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Bros, Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, BBC and Endemol Shine.
Drawing on the popularity of the Hindi channel Colors, its sister pay-TV channel will target up to 30 million English-speaking consumers nationwide. Available in both standard and high definition (HD), Colors Infinity will join Viacom18's other English language channels VH1 and Comedy Central.
"The market is widening its appeal across viewers who think and speak in English, but haven't been invited to consume international entertainment yet. Colors Infinity aims to speak to this larger audience which goes beyond the metros and has never been addressed by the category. English is an extremely important space for us and with this move, we will further strengthen our share in the category," Sudhanshu Vats, CEO, Viacom18 Group, told Indian Television.
The new channel will be co-curated by Bollywood stars: director-producer Karan Johar and actor Alia Bhatt
