Telefónica's wholesale pay-TV satellite unit, Media Networks, is being used by over 700 channels across Latin America, in the all the region's main markets except Mexico and Argentina.
The unit is distributing 594 standard definition (SD) and 128 high definition (HD) networks through its direct-to-home (DTH) platform, across 19 different pay-TV operations in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
"By the end of May we reached 722 networks," said Javier Izquierdo, director for operations, engineering and DTH service implementation at Media Networks. "We are actively supporting growth in the region's DTH market, both through Movistar TV and other operators. The numbers mean Media Networks is the main DTH wholesaler in the region, and our teleport in Lurin (Peru) is Latin America's most important satellite hub."
Media Networks' main partners in the region are Telefónica Brazil, VIVO and Movistar TV.
In addition, Media Networks is running satellite operations for 12 other players including Cable & Wireless, which launched its satellite TV service less than a year ago.
