beIN taps Mediapro deal to bring La Liga to Asia

La Liga broadcasting rights for Asia, previously held by Fox International Channels, will be held for the next three seasons by beIN Media Group across several major territories.
According to Media Business Asia, the deal marks the first salvo from the Qatar group as it looks to ramp up its Asian presence and profile. beIN has taken advantage of its close partnership with Mediapro, which manages the new collective rights of La Liga on an international scale, to win Spanish football for Asian markets.
La Liga is one of the most followed sports competitions in the world, featuring Real Madrid and Barcelona, which have legions of fans across Asia, and stars such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suárez and Neymar.
“beIn is putting some serious coin down, and really operating without fear to redraw the sports rights landscape,” observed a senior source to the business media.
According to the analysis, La Liga will be the first batch of new content used by beIN sports subsidiary beIN Sports as it looks to revitalise its loss-making sports networks in Asia-Pacific under new leadership. Also planned are bids on incoming tenders for BPL football, as well as any available rights to golf, tennis and wrestling.
