As demand for video skyrockets, the worldwide broadband access market, including PON, DSL and cable, is expected to achieve revenues of almost $12 billion by 2019.

According to a report by Dell'Oro Group, there will be continued growth from both the cable and PON markets through 2019, while the DSL market will decline over this period.

"Growth in the cable market will be driven by DOCSIS 3.1 upgrades, while strong demand for PON will continue to come from service providers in China," said Alam Tamboli, senior analyst at Dell'Oro Group. "In addition to China, we expect service providers in other countries to significantly increase their consumption of PON technology going forward."

Next-generation PON technologies are also expected to push demand, the firm added. Vendors are working to address the first- to second-generation PON technology upgrade path via backwards-compatibility to ensure the PON infrastructure installed today will still be usable in the future.
