Swedish telco Millicom has appointed Cynthia Gordon as executive VP, CEO Africa Division. She will take up the role on 21 September and lead the company's six operations in Africa: Tanzania, Ghana, DRC, Senegal, Rwanda and Chad.
Gordon will focus on delivering and executing a strong and profitable organic growth plan for Africa and will report directly to Millicom's CEO, aiming to lead a newly-created Africa executive committee, tasked with overseeing and driving Millicom's African operations.
Gordon has more than 20 years of telecom sector experience, leading mobile, broadband and fixed line operations in emerging markets across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Russia. She developed her Africa experience while at Orange, where she was VP of partnerships and emerging markets, and Ooredoo where she was CCO.
"I am delighted to welcome Cynthia to Millicom. Under Cynthia's leadership, the Africa division will be optimised to focus on delivering organic growth in the region," commented Mauricio Ramos, CEO. "She knows the telecoms industry inside out, and will bring her commercial acumen to support the delivery of our strategy to build and grow our digital services in Africa while creating value for our shareholders."
Gordon added: "This is a transformative time for the digital and telecommunications space in Africa. I am really looking forward to joining Millicom, which is bringing a digital lifestyle, mobile access, mobile financial services, business services and more to millions of people who increasingly see the Internet as one of the most important enablers for their development."
