Over 120,000 users trying to access the over-the-top (OTT) platform TotalChannel minutes before the Champions League kicked off has crashed the Spanish service.
The failure of the service has been a hard blow for Mediapro's OTT platform which added the Al-Jazeera signal as a premium hook for viewers during the 2015-2016 season. In addition to the crash, many users also reported connection problems during the games' first minutes on social networks.
Tuesday evening was the big night for beIN Sports and TotalChannel, with three out of the five Spanish teams taking part in the Champions League - Real Madrid, Seville and Atlético de Madrid - were debuting.
Mediapro, which has officially apologised to the 7,000 users who couldn't watch the game, tried to redirect the traffic to beIN Sport's online platform, beinsportsconnect.es.
The company has recommended that connect to TotalChannel well in advance in future, in order to avoid crashes, and says it will investigate users' complaints after the OTT failure.
