Independent content distributor DRG has acquired the exclusive worldwide rights to Robert Redford's The West.

The epic documentary series chronicles the dramatic evolution of the American West in the 19th century. Produced by Stephen David Entertainment with Sundance Productions for AMC and currently in production, the series is set to air next year, with DRG holding the international distribution rights.

Using a blend of dramatisation, documentary footage and visual effects, The West catapults viewers into the violent and action-packed world of the cowboys, Indians, outlaws and gunslingers of the Wild West. From Jesse James to Billy the Kid, Redford explores this unique period of US history between the end of the Civil War and turn of the century. The series will also include guest contributions from talent including Ed Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, Kris Kristofferson, Burt Reynolds and James Caan, among others.

"The West is a thoroughly unique series exploring a fascinating part of US and world history," said Noel Hedges, EVP of content, DRG. "It unveils the connected stories between many of the myths of the Wild West, presented by Robert Redford who brings to the project his own personal enthusiasm and expert knowledge of the era. The top level production values will make this broad, epic television."

Executive producer of The West, Stephen David, added: "It is fantastic to be working with DRG to bring The West to an international audience. The scope of this story is tremendous and changed not only America, but the world, so I am delighted that audiences all over the globe will now have a chance to enjoy this fascinating series."

The move follows DRG's expansion to an LA office.
