Bake Off cooks up strong August for iPlayer
| 04 October 2015
The BBC iPlayer has shown above par performance in August 2015, right at the heart of TV’s seasonal low.
Data released by BBC iStats shows that there were 278 million TV and radio requests for programmes on the catch–up and on-demand service in August, up 8% on July 2015 but also up 13% compared with the same month a year ago,
For the month as regards TV there were 226 million iPlayer requests, up 11% month-on-month and 24% year-on-year. The iPlayer statistics now include content that is only available on BBC iPlayer, as well as programmes broadcast on BBC TV channels.
Undoubtedly the figures, which belie the traditional summer lull, were significantly helped by the return of The Great British Bake Off to BBC TV. Episodes 1-4 of the series were the most-watched episodes in August, delivering over 1.5 million requests each and a total of 7.3 million requests across all four episodes. Long-standing soap EastEnders, new dramas The Scandalous Lady W, Partners In Crime and Ripper Street were also markedly popular.
The iPlayer Performance data also showed that tablets and computers alone formed nearly half of the TV requests. However connected TV devices saw the greatest increases compared with July. In addition, 7% of TV requests were for live TV viewing in August.
