Benitez hails unstoppable skipper

Gerrard benefiting from greater freedom

Rafa Benitez believes that Steven Gerrard has become an even better player since linking up with Fernando Torres.

The pair have established such a potent understanding that they are now drawing comparisons with some of the greatest double acts in the club's illustrious history.

Gerrard and Torres is now widely considered by many of the Anfield faithful to be just as effective as the all conquering partnerships of Keegan and Toshack and Rush and Dalglish.

With 44 goals between them already this season it is easy to understand why such high praise is being handed out.

Their boss has continuously hailed the impact the duo have had on the Reds' season so far, but he feels that it is club captain Gerrard who has benefited most from the arrival of someone to help share the burden of expectation on Merseyside.

"With the freedom he has now and his quality going forward, he's unstoppable," said the Spaniard.

"Stevie now has the same freedom he had as a right winger when he came inside.

"He's enjoying it because he knows he can go forward with no problem.

"The understanding with Fernando is also very good. He knows that when he goes forward he can pick him out easily.

"It could be that they bring out the best in each other.

"Of course he still needs to help out the midfielders but it's not the same as running back 30 or 40 metres.

"He knows what we expect from him and he is playing well in virtually every game. Every manager talks to their players about what to do but he is clever enough to know that."
